in the pause
floating in the balance
Martha’s Vineyard is on the precipice of spring. The fancy restaurant down the street has hung out a shingle that says 3/30: a reopening date, a promise. About a million daffodils came up last night while I was sleeping, ready to burst at the slightest hint of sun. Up above, the all-male tree line is coming to, bloated and bleary—soon they will regain their swagger and a torrent of neon polin will rain down on my life, but not yet.
This is the pause between movements, the calm before the storm.
At work, I’m experiencing this on a bone level. My last day at Little, Brown’s Voracious imprint was Friday 3.17, and I will be starting my next position at Chronicle Books on 4.3.
Saying goodby has been incredibly bittersweet, but I’m very excited and grateful for a new adventure. And I don’t hate the timing—Aries season is always a fortuitous moment to step into something new.
For now, I have a two week pause: without a job, without a paycheck, without an inbox. I am using the time to catch up: on sleep, on seeing my parents, on figuring out how to keep skunks away from my deck.
A lot of people have asked me if I’m going to use this time to write, and the answer is yes: this newsletter. Voila!
What I’m really enjoying right now is reading—reading like no one is watching. Yes, that includes books I’ve read before. Yes, smut, yes trash. I am I am not taking recommendations, and I am not finishing what’s on my plate.
Office hours have been a continued source of joy for me—it’s been so wonderful to get to touch base with so many of you. I plan to do this again in the fall for those I couldn’t accommodate this time around, and in the meanwhile, feel free to send me any burning questions over email. I love hearing from you guys!
Wishing everyone a safe and happy week ♥
