Here’s a riddle:
What exists, but doesn’t; is both famous and obscure; and is unrecognizable, but also stuck in your head?
FAKE POP SONGS
Songs that are famous in books and stories exist too, you guys!! Even if they really don’t. Here’s a celebration of a few of my faves.
“Fever Dog”
This fake jam from Almost Famous is the song that propels Still Water into the mainstream, and the bass solo is dreamy in a very real way. (To sample, just click on the photo).
“Sheets of Egyptian Cotton”
Who can forget the scene when Brittany Murphy’s Uptown Girls character first sees her fling Neal wearing the jacket she made singing the song she TOLD him needed a hook? And, oh what a hook!
“Pop! Goes My Heart”
I mean, it doesn’t get better than Hugh Grant in a fake 80s band…or this dance break.
“That Thing You Do”
Go ONEDERS! Also, everyone always talks about Liv Tyler in That Thing You Do, but guys, Charlize is in this movie, too. Not enough people remember that.
“Way Back Into Love”
This is also from Music and Lyrics ( if I’m being honest, this could have been a Music and Lyrics themed list) but it’s just the best. Alex and Sophie and CORA—“She’s bigger than Brittney and Christina combined”. Also pre-Glee Matthew Morrison as Ray LOL.
If you like fake songs, you can pre-order my upcoming tome, Songs in Ursa Major—it’s full of them! Out in just 2 (!) weeks. These early sales always help a new book find its footing and are very much appreciated.
